Book Review The Art of Social Media Power Tips for Power Users

The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users” by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick is a good read that does not waste your time. Their advice is current and very accessible. I guarantee that beginners and social pros alike will learn a new trick from this book.

I received a copy of “The Art of Social Media” early and tore into it right away. Guy and Peg show you what’s important with solid “how to” information from profile optimization to tying it all together with a neat bow. Even seemingly simple details like having a great headshot for your avatar are highlighted and believe me, they really count.

Top networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and more are covered here. A whopping 123 tips are provided in 12 easy to read chapters too. I especially love tip #17 on the use of social media networks’ lists, groups and communities. Often overlooked, these have been a goldmine for me.

Content creation and sharing are explained including how to set up an editorial calendar and recommended tools to use. How to create a “perfect” post is also laid out for you here. They even tell you how often to post and where. And don’t forget to read the section on responding to comments and how to engage.

If you are a blogger, and you should be anyhow, you will learn how to integrate social sharing with your blog and blog posts. Even if you do not have your own blog, you can be a guest blogger on someone else’s.

You will learn how to make your events more social. And get help with setting up your own via Google+ Hangouts on Air (HOA). Chapter 8 includes an in-depth tutorial on creating and HOA and promoting it too. If you are wondering about running your own Twitter chat, that is covered too.

All of these “do’s” are tempered with a chapter on what to avoid as well.

SMO, or social media optimization tips are provided by platform for you to use.

A brief case study on how to assemble all of the parts presented in the book rounds things out nicely.

A quick read that has plenty of detail for you to bookmark and reference for later. Do check out “The Art of Social Media” soon!
