Hashtags are a great way to help your photos get found when someone searches. They help to categorize your images. Use hashtags that are both specific and relevant to the content of your photos. For example use the hashtag #cat for a photo of a cat is good, but 12.8 million results will be returned in the search. Using #black #striped #cat is better and more specific if your photo is of a black cat with stripes, which returns 1 result.
Arguably the best hashtags for Instagram are the Top 10 or Top 100. Using these with your photos will make them appear in some of the most popular searches. Chances are that you will get more likes too this way. Be careful to only use hashtags that are appropriate for your image popular or not. Don’t use #rain for a photo taken on a sunny, cloudless day unless you are being ironic. Even then tread lightly and try not to abuse the tags.

After you take a photo using Instagram or choose one from your library you can add a caption. In the caption field you can add hashtags. You can type in the hashtags you want by hand and Instagram will offer to autocomplete if you choose a popular one. My tip is to keep the top 100 hashtags in a Notepad document and give it an easy to find name like, “Instagram Top 100 Hashtags”. That way you can quickly copy ands paste the hashtags you want by simply switching between apps. If you already posted your photo you can also add hashtags in a Comment.

Great post Peter, I especially like your advice about getting descriptive using hashtags. How do you feel about those posts that have over 20 hashtags which are relevant to the picture? Do you think there is such a thing as too many hashtags?

I don’t use hashtags. I just generally don’t think about it. I agree with Carla that sometimes there are so many hashtags it interferes with my ability to enjoy a photo. I feel like I’m being told what to see. On the other hand, hashtags are very necessary for curation.
